Al-Jabbar and Al-Mutakabbir Names of Allah

Who would you call when you feel distressed?

Allah…

When you need to strengthen your creed and faith, you must read the Quran, as Allah said in His Holy Book, Surah An-Naml, Ayah 93, “Is not He Who responds to the distressed one when he calls Him, Who removes the evil, and Who makes you inheritors of the earth, generation after generation? Is there any ilah (god) with Allah? Little is it that you remember” (أَمَّن يُجِيبُ ٱلۡمُضۡطَرَّ إِذَا دَعَاهُ وَيَكۡشِفُ ٱلسُّوٓءَ وَيَجۡعَلُكُمۡ خُلَفَآءَ ٱلۡأَرۡضِۗ أَءِلَٰهٞ مَّعَ ٱللَّهِۚ قَلِيلٗا مَّا تَذَكَّرُونَ). Only Allah Almighty can save the hopeless and distressed, as He is Al-Jabbar. He is Al-Jabbar, the One Who restores and mends what is broken, and Al-Mutakabbir, the One Who possesses absolute greatness and majesty.

Al-Jabbar

(The All Compelling)

The Irresistible, The Restorer, The Repairer

Allah is the One for Whom nothing happens in His dominion except what He has willed. The Name Al-Jabbar has several accepted meanings, such as the Dominant and the Compeller. He is the One Who compels the tyrants and overwhelms them by His Power and Might. No matter how mighty they are, they are subject to the power of Allah, and their power is in His Hand.

Another meaning relates to restoration. He restores what is broken, comforts the heartbroken, restores lost lives, and repairs what has been destroyed. He heals your wounds and eases your pain, and He rectifies corrupted souls. All of this occurs according to His Divine Will, and He is never compelled.

In our daily duas, we ask Allah to forgive us, have mercy on us, guide us, support us, protect us, provide for us, and elevate us. We repeat these duas while our hearts and minds reflect on the Name of Allah, Al-Jabbar.

In addition, the Name Al-Jabbar is a call to everyone not to be a tyrant or an oppressor. As Allah controls everything, whatever His servants desire will never go against His Will and Power. Corrupters and tyrants may think that they control the lives and deaths of beings, but their deviant souls deceive them, making them believe that they control this world. But the reality is that Allah is leading them towards their doomed destiny and final end.

That is why we need to strengthen our faith in Allah. As we witness atrocities, brutality, and genocides that occur in this world, we must remind ourselves that none of this goes beyond Allah’s Will and Dominion. Even if they lived for hundreds of years, they would eventually die, and sooner or later, their judgment will come.

Al-Mutakabbir

(The Dominant One)

The Tremendous, The Great, The Proud

He is the One Who is free from the attributes of His creatures and from resembling them. He is exalted far above all creation. He is tremendous and manifests His greatness in all things and in many ways. Allah describes Himself and says, “There is nothing like unto Him” (Surah Ash-Shura, 42:11).

The Name Al-Mutakabbir incorporates the meanings of the perfection of His Self and existence. He is above everything and far above all harm. He is the One Who alone possesses all greatness and pride. He possesses a greatness that no human can challenge or compete with. He is too Great to submit to others; rather, submission is due to Him, and only to Him.

When we need someone to lean on, we lean on Allah, the One Who possesses all power and authority. He is Allah. We feel secure and at peace when we worship Allah, the One Who possesses all the attributes of greatness and majesty, whom no one can defeat or even come close to. May Allah enlighten our hearts with the light of His Names and Attributes.
